First Lieutenant Cale Simmons is an Air Force World Class Athlete Program member and will be competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janero, Brazil. During the games, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, Simmons will compete in pole vault.
Simmons received his commission from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2013. He competed on the Academy track and field team from 2009-2013. He excelled in pole vaulting and decided to focus his energy in that sport.
The lieutenant became a member of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program in August 2015. He is a four-time All American with a personal best jump of 5.72 meters at the Kyle Macintosh Twilight Meet, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, in June 2016.
He finished the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, July 4, 2016, with a jump of 5.65 meters, clinching his spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Simmons will make his Olympic debut Aug. 13, 2016, during pole-vault qualifiers in Rio.
His recent accomplishments also include a first-place finish at the Colorado School of Mines Last Chance Meet, May 15, 2016, Golden, Colorado; a second-place finish with a jump of 5.56 meters at the Paradise Valley Community College Meet, May 22, 2016, Phoenix, Arizona; and a first-place finish with a jump of 5.55 meters at the Hartnell Memorial Day Meet, May 29-31, San Jose, California.
The lieutenant’s twin brother, 1st Lt. Rob Simmons, also graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2013 and was a member of the Academy’s pole-vaulting team. The twin’s older sister, Capt. Rachel Schaefer, is a 2009 USAFA graduate and noted western conference and USAFA pole vaulter.
