The Air Force, the great opportunity
by Summer W
To live, work and play in the Air Force takes on a new meaning in my situation. Currently, my family is the only Air Force family stationed at Sasebo Naval base in Japan. The total force of the Air Force contingent is two. My husband is one of two. Although we do not live on an Air Force base the Air Force has provided my family and I a great opportunity to work with one of the sister services. This unique situation could have proved to be problematic but instead it helped to open the eyes of some of our Naval counterparts as to what the Air Force does and it helped us to appreciate the work that the Navy puts forth in keeping our seas safe. Since being stationed at Sasebo, Japan I have been able to go to school, start up my own business, and contract two part-time jobs for services I provide to the base. And since we are family oriented we also support MWR, youth sports, Religious Ministries, Girl Scouts as well as Community Relations that seek to strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and our host country. Being on the Navy base has also afforded my husband the opportunity to participate in a Navy tradition, The Chief’s Initiation. He is the first Air Force member to go through Chief’s Initiation in the Pacific Realm. The Air Force made it all possible even though we are not stationed on an Air Force base.
